The winter setting operates with the heat from the factory-installed lamp. The refrigerator and freezer sections share a common compressor that is regulated by the thermostat in the refrigerator. At an ambient temperature of less than 64°F (18°C), the temperature difference between the ambient and refrigerator compartment temperatures is lower than it is in other cases, so the compressor starts up more infrequently. However, there is still a big difference between the ambient temperature and the freezer section temperature. As a result, the compressor activity at low ambient temperatures is insufficient and the frozen food can defrost. The refrigerator interior lighting therefore remains on during the winter setting even when the appliance door is closed. The temperature in the refrigerator rises as a result of the heat given off and the compressor is activated more often. However, a customer-installed LED lamp will not give off sufficient heat to increase the temperature in the refrigerator section.
