A latte and espresso


 

ESPRESSO

Espresso is a classic Italian method for preparing coffee that uses a small amount of almost-boiling water at approximately 90 °C or 190 °F. The water is forced through finely-ground dark roast coffee beans, producing the perfect espresso with a slightly thicker consistency. This drink is served with a foamy cream topping, known as 'crema'.

LATTE

A latte has ⅓ espresso and ⅔ steamed milk and is topped with frothed milk, all in a cup, mug, or glass. To create the perfect latte, draw a shot of espresso from your Miele coffee machine, then pour in the steamed milk. The latte should include more steamed milk than foam. When the cup is almost full, a small amount of foam is poured on top and can be used to create "latte art" featuring shapes such as hearts or plants.

CAPPUCCINO

Cappuccino is a popular beverage prepared by pouring a shot of espresso into a cup and topping it with steamed milk and foam in equal proportions. If you want extra sweetness, you can sprinkle ground chocolate over the foam, but many people find that the drink is creamy and delicious and doesn’t require any additions. A cappuccino is typically smaller than a latte, with 150 to 180 ml of liquid. The size of the cup is essential to achieve the perfect balance of coffee flavour and creamy milk.

AMERICANO OR LONG BLACK COFFEE

This type of coffee is prepared by adding hot water to a shot of espresso. The water slightly dilutes the espresso, which provides the volume and texture of a drip coffee combined with the deep, rich flavour of an espresso.

RISTRETTO

A ristretto is a more robust, more concentrated espresso. They are made with the same amount of ground coffee as a traditional espresso but with half as much water. Straight ristrettos are traditionally drunk from small demitasse cups to avoid diluting the beverage with milk or water. They have a bolder, fuller espresso flavour with less bitterness.
